Let’s talk about organic skincare

Welcome to September!
Whilst our heads may currently be filled with golden leaves and pumpkin spice lattes as Autumn draws near, there’s something else on our minds here at Seaham Hall.
Organic September.
That’s right, this month is dedicated to all things organic, which seems like the perfect time to talk about organic skincare.
What is organic skincare?
We’re probably all familiar with the idea of skincare and the benefits of having a proper skincare routine. But it’s not just about the steps you take - the products you use are just as important. Organic skincare refers to the use of natural products which contain ingredients that have been foraged from nature or grown on organic farms.
Why use organic skincare?
Many popular skincare products contain toxic chemicals and perfumes that can irritate your skin. These types of products often don’t contain any of the nutrients your skin needs to stay healthy. Organic skincare brands tend to me more open about what’s actually in their products - in fact the ingredients will be the main selling point. And because all of these ingredients are natural, you don’t have to worry about any nasty surprises.
Organic skincare is also a more sustainable option if you’re trying to practise greener shopping habits. Because organic ingredients are usually either foraged or grown on organic farms, there are many benefits for wildlife, society and the earth in general. Ingredients are generally locally sourced, so you know where your products are coming from. At Seaham Hall, we’re very conscious about working with local or regional suppliers as often as we can, and this applies to the skincare products we use in spa treatments, too.
Our favourite organic skincare brand
When it comes to luxury organic skincare, ishga is our go-to. All of their products are ethically made in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, significantly lowering their carbon footprint.
They’re also certified by the Soil Association, meaning they have the organic seal of approval!
Ishga’s ingredients
Let’s take a closer look at what goes into each ishga product.
Hebridean seaweed
The not-so-secret ingredient in ishga’s products is Scottish seaweed - in fact, seaweed is at the heart of their skincare range. Hand harvested from the shore, ishga work on a rotational basis to allow the seaweed to regenerate naturally.
But why seaweed? It’s one of the richest sources of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants, as well as essential fatty acids. This means it can deliver powerful anti-aging, hydrating and skin-renewing properties.
Sea water
Ishga don’t use any tap water, instead choosing to collect sea water by hand, being careful to only take what they need for production that week. The sea is rich in vital minerals and contains 83 elements found on the periodic table.
Spring water
Every product in the ishga skincare range contains spring water, which is in a remote location among the hills and lochs on The Isle of Lewis. The bottom of the spring is blue clay, which according to Scottish folklore, was used throughout the ages for its healing and therapeutic properties. This spring water is therefore rich in minerals like potassium, magnesium and sulphates.
