Access Statement

This access statement does not contain personal opinions as to our suitability for those with access needs, but aims to accurately describe the facilities and services that we offer all our guests/visitors. Seaham Hall Hotel and Serenity Spa Access Statement.

Introduction

Situated on a cliff top in the coastal town of Seaham, County Durham, Seaham Hall Hotel is the perfect place to stay whether you are visiting for business or leisure.

We have 20 bedrooms with 1 accessible bedroom suitable for wheelchair users situated on the first floor with lift access and step-free access. This room can also be made into either a double or twin room. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, in which the accessible bedroom en-suite has a level entry shower.

The nearest railway station is Seaham, which is 1.4 miles away (a 25-30 minute walk), however, taxis are available at the station and Seaham Hall Hotel is approximately a 5-minute drive. If you require an accessible taxi this can be booked in advance, see contact information for details.

The nearest bus stop is at the coastal entrance to the hotel grounds, stops on both sides of the road have shelter and seating. All buses can accommodate one wheelchair.

Car Parking and Arrival

There is onsite parking with Blue Badge parking available.

In the main hotel car park, there are 9 bays and 1 disabled bay; this is 70m from the main entrance.

Valet parking is available from the main entrance.

There are also three alternative car parks:

  • Hotel - 20 spaces
  • Spa - 49 spaces

Conference & Banqueting – 51 spaces, 6 disabled bays

The car park surface is tarmac with a tarmac path leading to the main entrance. The car park is well lit at night and the path has uplighters.

There is a drop-off point at the main entrance of the hotel, with a dropped curb.

The main entrance door is automatic and is 1152mm/60 inches wide.

We have a porter service available 24 hours a day to assist with your luggage.

Main Entrance / Reception / Welcome Area

The main entrance door is automatic, and is 1152mm/60ins wide.

Reception is on the ground floor and has level access throughout.

The floor surface throughout the lobby is flagstone and carpet.

The area is evenly and well lit with overhead lighting and wall lights.

Seating in the reception area consists of two armchairs; there are an additional two soft chairs without arms at the reception desk for check-in. All furniture is moveable.

A familiarisation tour is available on request.

Bedrooms

There is 1 first floor accessible bedroom, which can be reached via lift and has step free access.

All entry doors are 900mm/35.5ins wide and easy to open.

Furniture can be easily removed or rearranged in the room if required.

Twin or double bedrooms are available.

There is a transfer space of at least 1200mm/47ins on one side of the bed.

The height of the bed from the floor to the top of the mattress is 610mm/24ins.

Blocks to raise the height of the bed are available on request.

Emergency pull cord to lounge and bathroom areas.

The room is bright and evenly lit. Overhead and wall lighting is used, controlled by panels situated at the entrance to the room and at the bedside. Additional reading lamps are available on request.

The height of the wardrobe rails can be adjusted.

This bedroom and all other bedrooms in the hotel offer the following:

  • Lighting as above
  • Good colour contrast between the floor, walls and doors
  • Short pile carpet
  • Non-feather bedding available on request
  • Television with remote control, subtitles, and audio description facilities

Bathrooms, Shower-rooms and Toilets

All suites have an en-suite bathrooms and the bathroom in the accessible suite offers the following:

  • Doors are 900mm/35.5ins wide, easy to open
  • Small step (90mm/3.4ins) into shower
  • The toilet height is 430mm/17ins. and has side flush push bar
  • The wash basin height is 880mm/34.5ins
  • Horizontal and vertical grab rails are fitted either side of the toilet
  • Lever taps are fitted on the washbasin and bath
  • The bath has an emergency call system and intercom system fitted on the tiled wall
  • Well lit with overhead lights and fluorescent lights at either side of the mirror
  • Lighting controls for all lights at entrance to bathroom
  • Good colour contrast between the doors, floor, walls and towels
  • The flooring is non-slip tile
  • Seat raisers and shower seats are available on request

Public Areas - Halls, Stairs, Landings, Corridors

All public areas, halls, stairs, landings and lifts, are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights (fluorescent lighting is used in the lift). Corridors are slightly dimmer lit by wall and ceiling lights.

Corridors are 1200mm/47ins wide and the floor covering is short pile carpet.

There is one lift with audio announcements and tactile buttons. The lower segment of the lift is covered with padded material on all sides and the upper segment of the lift is mirrored on all sides. The flooring is short pile carpet.

The lift access door is 910mm/36ins. wide and the lift itself is 1330mm/52.5ins. wide and 1380mm/54.5ins. deep.

Public Areas - The Bar and Lounge

The lounge area is situated on the ground floor with level entry from the reception and main entrance area.

The lounge door is 1680mm/65ins. wide.

The room has a mixture of seating with sofas and soft chairs, with and without arms, as well as some low stools, together with low coffee tables.

Lighting is natural daylight and by night overhead and wall lighting.

The flooring is wooden.

Bar food and drink can be served in the lounge.

The nearest toilets are outside the drawing room and the nearest accessible toilet is on the first floor which can be accessed via lift.

Restaurant

The Dining Room is situated on the ground floor with level entry from the reception and main entrance area.

Double doors to this area are normally open and the door opening is 1680mm/65ins.

The restaurant has level access throughout.

Tables in the restaurant are well spaced apart, with a clear height from the floor of 609mm/24ins, with a mixture of upright chairs with and without arms and quarter circle booths.

Lighting is natural daylight and by night, overhead and wall lighting used.

The flooring is wooden.

We do our best to cater for any dietary requirements; please contact us in advance with any specific requests. Where possible all our food produce is locally sourced.

The restaurant is table service.

Crockery is colour contrasted with the table where possible.

The nearest toilets are in the corridor directly outside the restaurant and the nearest accessible toilet is on the first floor which can be accessed via lift.

Public Toilets

Public toilets can be found:

Hotel

The ground floor with level access from the main corridor.

The first floor near main staircase and lift, these are fully accessible.

Spa

Lower ground outside treatment rooms where there is an accessible toilet.

In both changing rooms on the ground floor of the spa.

Around the pool area where there is also an accessible toilet.

Toilets on lower ground and first floor can be reached by lift.

Accessible toilets are:

  • Entrance door 900mm/35.5ins wide and level entry into the toilet
  • 980mm/38.5ins transfer space to the left of the ground floor toilet and to the right of the first floor toilet, when facing the toilet
  • The toilet height is 457mm/18ins
  • There are vertical rails either side of both basin and toilet
  • A flashing light when the fire alarm sounds
  • An emergency alarm pull cord
  • The toilets are well lit with fluorescent overhead lighting and there is a low level light switch
  • The flooring is tiled
  • There are lever taps on the sinks
  • There is good colour contrast, tiles are beige, toilets & washbasins are white
  • All other public WCs have the same lighting, flooring, lever taps as above

Spa Facilities

Spa facilities comprising of a sauna, steam room, sanarium, 20m swimming pool with massage stations, hamman, rasul, and snail showers are on the ground floor of the Spa. These can be accessed from the main entrance/reception area of the spa, and also via the underground walkway from the hotel or by a lift.

The gym is situated on the first floor which can be accessed by a flight of stairs or lift.

All doors to these areas are 860mm/34ins wide and easy to open.

There is a designated disabled shower area near poolside with WC.

The pool is accessed via steps into the shallow end of the pool. There are rails either side of the steps to assist entry.

The gym has a range of equipment: cycling machines, rowing machines, running machines, cross trainer weights and bars, exercise mats. Trained staff are on hand to provide any advice and guidance.

The sauna / sanarium / steam room entrances have level entry and the door widths are 700mm/27.5ins. Seating is provided.

All areas are well lit with fluorescent lighting throughout. Except changing area where ceiling lights are used.

Flooring in the leisure facilities is slip resistant wooden block flooring, except the pool and thermal areas, which are tiled.

Public toilets and accessible toilet are available at the pool.

All leisure facilities are open 7 days a week (Mon-Fri 06:30-22:00, Sat 07:00-22:00, Sun 08:00-22:00)

Treatment Room(s)

There are 13 treatment rooms situated on the lower ground floor in the spa, and can be accessed from the main entrance/reception area via 20 stairs, with a landing midway, or by lift.

All treatment rooms have level entry, with 2 steps to treatment bed level.

There are 4 treatment rooms situated on the first floor with level entry to treatments beds. These rooms can be accessed via 20 stairs with a landing midway, or by lift.

All doors are 900mm/35.5ins wide, light and slide to open.

There is no natural light in these rooms. They are not usually brightly lit but can be with levels controlled by dimmer switches, with overhead lighting. Candles are also burnt in the rooms. The majority of these rooms also have mood lighting.

The flooring is slip resistant wooden block flooring.

All treatment rooms have a WC.

Grounds and Gardens

We have 37 acres of grounds with a mixture of grass, woodland and shrubberies.

Areas closest to the hotel are flat.

Conference and Meeting Rooms

Our conference and meeting rooms are on the ground floor and can be accessed from the main entrance/reception area via level entry (ground floor).

All of these rooms have level access throughout.

All doors are 900mm/35.5ins wide.

All rooms have natural lighting. Overhead lighting can be controlled by dimmer switches and wall lights also provided.

Upright chairs with or without arms are available. Tables have a clear space of 609mm/24ins from the floor.

The flooring is short pile carpet.

The nearest public toilet with an accessible toilet is situated the first floor which can be accessed via a lift.

Entertainment

We have a banqueting/ballroom with a bar on the ground floor, access is step-free. This can be accessed from the main entrance/reception.

Lighting is even throughout. There is natural light from windows; both overhead and wall lighting is used which can be dimmed.

The flooring is short pile carpet.

Chairs and seating can be arranged to suit.

The nearest public toilets with an accessible toilet are situated on the first floor which can be accessed via a lift.

Additional Information

All of our staff receive regular training that includes disability awareness training.

We have a set of evacuation procedures – should you require assistance someone will come to your room and help you with evacuation.

We have safe lifts and evacuation chairs to assist.

A water bowl can be made available for assistance dogs when necessary.

Room service is available 24 hours.

Clear signage is used throughout the hotel.

The nearest General Hospital with an A&E unit and walk-in NHS facility is 8 miles away.

The nearest doctor’s surgery is 1 mile away, and the surgery building also has a walk-in NHS facility. Please contact reception for further information.

Free Wi-Fi Internet access is available in bedrooms and throughout the hotel.
