Hypnotherapy is a popular alternative therapy that more people are utilising to be guided through a variety of psychological barriers including stress, anxieties, irrational fears and addictions.
During hypnosis, the client is guided into a deep state of focus and relaxation that is achieved through the help of a hypnotherapist.
During this state, whilst being guided by the hypnotherapist, clients can work towards turning their attention inward to set their focus on certain areas of their life they would perhaps like to change. This could include relieving anxiety, overcoming fears, working towards quitting smoking or adopting a healthy lifestyle to lose weight.
There is a common misconception behind what hypnotherapy entails, which is mostly due to old school connotations of hypnotherapy in for example cartoons. Hypnotherapy is taken place in a very relaxed environment, some playing calming music and others silent. The client is usually seated in a comfortable position with bean bags, pillows and blankets and then is guided into hypnosis. Being guided into hypnosis is a lot like a guided meditation, where you’re listening closely to the words of the hypnotherapist and focusing your attention on what is being said.
Here at Seaham Hall, we have been running staff wellness classes which include monthly hypnotherapy sessions. The sessions have been taking place in the aim of reducing stress and it’s effects, anxiety and working towards having a more relaxed mindset at work. An attendee commented: “During the hypnotherapy, I felt so relaxed yet was aware of my surroundings and behaviour. I was able to decide in my mind if I wanted to move my arm to feel more comfortable, although my limbs felt very heavy. I initially went in thinking I wouldn’t be able to move but I could. I just felt extremely relaxed and almost fell asleep!”
Another attendee said: “I slept so well afterwards, whereas I normally wake up three or four times a night. Also, I think I am experiencing fewer headaches and migraines since we started the sessions. I feel better in myself as get less stressed over small things. I have started using the breathing techniques we learnt on a morning when I wake which helps you focus. I’ve also started writing to do lists at work which help focus me whereas before I would flit from one task to another.”
