Going Green

Going Green

Around the Hotel

Here is what you can see in action:

  • We use pencils made from recycled CD cases in our meeting rooms and bedrooms
  • We offer our guests the option to re-use rather than replace towels and bed linen
  • Our bottled water supplier Belu invests in WaterAid, an international charity that transforms lives by improving access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation
  • All of our brochures and promotional material are available online to save on print and paper
  • We support the Northumbrian Living Water Campaign
  • All our guest bedrooms are fitted with LED light bulbs to reduce our carbon footprint
  • Correspondence with colleagues, guests and suppliers is done electronically where possible
  • We have installed four EV charging ports in our guest car park, allowing guests and spa members to charge their electric vehicles

Behind the scenes

Here are some initiatives you don’t see:

  • We make our own compost from garden waste and reuse water for our gardens, plants and cleaning of pathways.
  • We recycle waste oil from our kitchen, paper and cardboard
  • Our food waste is sent to a Biomass plant and recycled into fuel
  • We have made a considerable investment into replacing all of our light bulbs with LED lighting
  • We are working on reducing our carbon footprint by innovative schemes such as solar panels, CHP (Combined Heat and Power) and biomass.
  • We donate some of our glass bottles to local company http://totesadore.com/who transform them into objects of art
  • Our office printers are set to print in black ink to save on ink. Cartridges are recycled with the Great North Air Ambulance
  • We promote the use of email and document scanning in all departments rather than printing
  • We work with Clearflow, who set up a facilities management software to reduce on our paper waste, man power and improve sustainability.

Business Responsibility Awareness

What we’d like to share with you:

  • We run an active and energised CSR committee, both to drive our existing policies and to seek new initiatives
  • We encourage our guests to enjoy our 37 acres of fresh air and have bicycles and maps for them to use.
  • We encourage guests to travel by train by promoting the fact we are located only 20 minutes from the City of Durham and just under 3 hours from London
  • We support ‘Global Wellness Day’ which is an annual awareness event that promotes the importance of healthy living to our colleagues, members and guests
  • Food Miles is a vital concept in the planning and purchasing of the hotel supplies: we ensure that what we buy comes from local and sustainable sources wherever possible
  • Our restaurants feature seasonal produce which reaches the hotel very fresh, having travelled a short distance
  • We forage seasonal ingredients from our grounds including; wild garlic, sorrel, pine, seabuck and gorse flowers
  • Our waste management initiatives are working towards completely off-setting our carbon emission by segregation of waste
