It’s safe to say that many of us will be holidaying a little closer to home this year. However, a staycation provides the perfect opportunity to discover the beautiful landscapes and top attractions that can be found right on our doorstep.
With this in mind, here are just a few reasons why the North East is the perfect place for a staycation.
There are miles of beautiful beaches
The Durham Heritage Coastline stretches from Sunderland to Hartlepool and is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in England. You’ll find shallow bays with golden sands, pebbled-beaches covered with sea glass, and dramatic cliff tops which offer beautiful views out to sea.
Our favourites include the golden stretch of sand at Tynemouth and the historic bay at Whitby. But although we may be biased, we firmly believe the sea-glass scattered Seaham Beach is the most beautiful.
It’s rich in history and heritage
This part of the UK is the perfect place to soak up some culture. The stunning Durham Cathedral is a must-visit for all those staying in or near the city, while a trip to the World Heritage Site – Hadrian’s Wall – will make a fascinating day out for history fans.
There are plenty of things to keep families busy too, such as Raby Castle – home to acres of beautiful gardens – and the Washington Wetland Centre.
There are National Parks a-plenty
With the North York Moors, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North Pennines all just a short drive away, the North East is a walker’s paradise. You’ll find miles upon miles of picturesque walking routes which take you past some of England’s finest countryside and coastline.
But you don’t have to travel far to enjoy great walks. There are plenty of great walking and cycling routes right here in Durham which span across nature reserves, through quaint villages, and alongside peaceful river banks.
It’s closer than you think
We may not be far from the Scottish borders, but getting to the North East is easier than you think. We’re a mere hour and thirty minutes from the city of Leeds. And if you’re coming from Manchester or Birmingham, you can hit the road after breakfast and be sipping a glass of fizz in Durham by lunchtime.
Plus, the North East coastline tends to be quieter than those in the south, so if you’re craving some time by the sea, it could be the perfect place to escape to.
